Sperm freezing
With this technique the spermatozoids are suspended in a mixture that dehydrates the cell so that no ice crystals which can cause lysis (cell rupture) are formed while freezing.
The semen is frozen in straws, in liquid nitrogen. Once frozen, the sample is kept in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -195ºC until it is to be used.
It is not known how long a sample can be kept frozen, but studies show that semen from some animals is still viable 50 years after freezing.
